The towns of Abano, Montegrotto, Battaglia, Teolo and Galzignano represent the largest spa centre in Europe, specialised in mud balneotherapy and spa treatments. Fango Maturo D.O.C. is a real natural form of medicine, studied and researched for at least two centuries in collaboration with the University of Padua. It is currently used as a compress for therapeutic purposes. Its healing action is due to a mixture of at least 3 components:
- Solid or telluric (natural clay)
- Hydro-minerals (spa water)
- Biological (micro-organisms and biomaterials)
A compress created with this mixture acquires therapeutic properties after a period of “maturation” lasting 50-60 days, when the mud is kept in special tanks called “fangaie” and remains in contact with spa water that flows at a temperature of 60°C.
In close contact, mud and spa water help to develop a non-pathogenic thermophilic microbial community, which causes chemical and physical changes, thus enhancing both with valuable therapeutic active ingredients.
